Anglia Regnum ... Christophurus Saxton Describebat. 1579
|
A scarce map from the 1603 Vrients published edition of Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". The map has been attributed to Saxton and replaced Humphrey Lhuyd's map. Here, the outline shape of Wales is more recognisable although the south-west, and Cornwall in particular, still appears somewhat elongated. Counties are named and towns and villages are carefully differentiated. Van Den Broecke in "Ortelius Atlas Maps" estimates that only some 400 examples of this map were printed, of which only a fraction might now still exist. A large and decorative title cartouche appears in the upper right corner supported by putti and two fauns. Attractive colour does not overwhelm the particularly fine engraving of this important and decorative map, here in its first state.
