Norfolk A Countie Florishing & Populous Described And Devided ..
|
A most attractive example of the scarce first edition of John Speed's map of Norfolk, detailed and illustrated with a battle scene and plan of Norwich. This famous map has a more interesting history than most of Speed's plates from the "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain ...". The Norfolk plate suffered a crack in the original copperplate early in its publishing history, was subsequently re-engraved, and was eventually replaced by a new plate in mid-century. The imprint, style of decoration around the initial letter of the verso text, unhachured sea (added to the plate for the 1614 edition) and bold impression identify the early publication date.
