An early and rare example of a European produced dissected puzzle. Tobias Conrad Lotter is recognised for his innovative output of cartographic items; folding maps, atlases, post-route maps and so on. In this instance he has copied the new-fangled English device of the jig-saw puzzle with his maps mounted on card, dissected, and presented in a custom made wooden box, with sliding lid, labelled and covered with marbled paper. This decorative map of Italy has been dissected into 34 pieces, lacking two, those covering Sardinia and a northern State.
