An early and rare example of a European produced dissected puzzle. Tobias Conrad Lotter is recognised for his innovative output of cartographic items; folding maps, atlases, post-route maps and so on. In this instance he has copied the new-fangled English device of the jig-saw puzzle with his maps mounted on card, dissected, and presented in a custom made wooden box covered with marbled paper. Rarely found complete, this map of Europe has been cut into 40 pieces but lacks four, those for the British Isles, Denmark, Lithuania, and Greece, and is also missing the sliding box lid.
