One of three Frederic De Wit maps of South East Asia and the least frequently seen. This distinctive engraving covers from the Maldives to the Ladrones, northwards to include much of China and Taiwan. The map also includes the northern coastline of "Nova Hollandia" with, amongst various other names, a peninsula from this mainland named "Van Diemens Lant". A partial outline of Papua New Guinea is also shown and Parry comments on the "unique cartographic data" relating particularly to the Celebes. De Wit's title cartouche in the lower left corner is flanked by three figures, each forming a pictorial representation of their nationality. The mileage scale appears on a stone table beneath the title laden with trading wares. An attractive and insightful depiction of the geography, history and culture of the region. The map is rare, not listed by Koeman, and is, in this example, backed with an extra leaf, typical of charts of the time. An attractive example of the map with engraver's guidelines visible, indicative of an early "pull" from the plate.
