Sussex, Surry And Kent, By C.S. Corrected And Amended ...
|
An attractive and scarce late issue of the first detailed map of the counties of South-East England, as surveyed by Christopher Saxton. Engraved in 1575 by the Fleming Remigius Hogenberg who was working in London, this map of Middlesex, Surrey, Sussex and Kent was published in the first county atlas of England and Wales. Saxton's atlas, produced under the direction of Thomas Seckford and Lord Burghley, Courtiers to Queen Elizabeth I, has a long and interesting history being reissued by several different publishers over almost two hundred years. Around 1690 Philip Lea re-engraved some of the plates. He added roads, town plans and other embellishments, while also removing some of the other features. In 1730, at the sale of the latter's stock, George Willdey took on the plates adding further imprints and, on this plate, his advertisement for his business - "the Great Toy, Spectacle, Chinaware and Print Shop". Despite the longevity of the map plates, a tribute to the high esteem in which Saxton's work was held, the survival of maps from any edition is slight and all are in high demand. This is a relatively large size plate and is, when found, often with trimmed edges, or other damage. This example has some expert rebacking to paper weakness but is otherwise most acceptable.
