A Map Of The Provinces Of New-York And New Jersey ...
|
Matthew Albert Lotter's (in anglicized form) edition of the Sauthier map published during the Revolutionary War. The map is printed on two sheets, here joined, and includes "A Part Of Pennsylvania And The Province Of Quebec". The map sometimes appeared in Seutter's "Grosser Atlas" and also in some editions of his "Atlas Novus". Claude Joseph Sauthier was responsible for a number of surveys and manuscript maps in this period, and is perhaps best-known for his manuscript map of the provinces of New York and New Jersey. The Sauthier map was first published on three sheets in 1776 by William Faden as "A Map Of The Province Of New York" and included considerable additional detail of previously little mapped areas. This example has the engraved date of 1777 and would have been published from 1778 onwards. A fine example of Revolutionary War mapping and the developing landscape - both physical and political - and representing the increasing international interest in North American affairs.
