Samuel Pufendorf

Samuel Pufendorf

A miniature head and shoulders portrait of Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632-1694), the jurist, political philosopher, economist, statesman and historian. The portrait would seem to date from before 1684 as it was not until this year that he was ennobled and became von Pufendorf. He was made a baron a few months before his death and is perhaps best remembered for his commentaries and revisions of the theories of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius, as well as the maps and plans of fortifications that he produced. The artist David Klocker Ehrenstrahl was born in Hamburg and died in Stockholm, now often called the "father of Swedish painters".
