Benjamin Martin, the renowned designer and manufacturer of microscopes, is shown here in a small roundel with the instruments of his trade beneath him. Martin's development of microscope design and production meant microscopes became more portable and the illumination of samples and slides improved greatly. This particular portrait was engraved by R.Page for the "Encyclopaedia Londinensis".
