Henry Goltzius
|
Petrus De Jode's head and shoulders portrait of Henry Goltzius would seem to be a tribute to the work of the artist himself - he is shown printed in a "chiaroscuro" style with the contrast between light and dark extremly apparent. The light falls on Goltzius' forehead and eyes thus highlighting the artist's important characteristics - the ability to 'see' and his artistic creativity. De Jode's signature appears lower left whilst lower right are the traces of another name. Goltzius engraved the portrait of Mercator that was used in his edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia" in 1584.
