Second Part Of Asia. Being China, Part Of India ...
|
A large and decorative map of oriental Asia after one of the leading cartographers of the period. This detailed map covers all China, Korea, Japan, Indo-China, Malaysia and the islands including the Philippines, Borneo and New Guinea, and also just touches upon north Australia or "New Holland". "Improved" by one Solomon Bolton, with the addition of notations of relevance, the map was copied from one by the leading French mapmaker, Johann Baptist D'Anville, whose Paris connections gave him access to the latest reports from the many Jesuit Missions and French merchant travellers around the globe. This map appeared in Malachy Postlethwaite's "Universal Dictionary of Trade and Commerce ..." and represented the best synopsis of geographic knowledge of the time. Finely engraved on four sheets, by London engraver Richard Seale, the map is joined and has attractive hand colour. Decoration is restricted to the elegant surround for the title cartouche, supported by two dragons and overseen by a Chinese character.
