Sumatrae Et Insularum Locorumque ...
|
A scarce and detailed chart of the island of Sumatra from Jan Jansson's series of larger scale presentations of the south-east Asian islands. Coastal regions are clearly depicted with a good smattering of placenames whereas the inland areas show no detail, only indications of forestation and a mountainous spine running the length of the island. The neighbouring coastlines of south-west Malaya are also detailed, along with the islands around the Straits of Singapore, here named "Senasur". The mileage scale, at lower right, and titlepiece, at top left, are decorated with putti and native figures respectively. An attractive example of an important chart, the largest scale presentation of the island produced at that time.
