A finely presented large atlas of the early-nineteenth century world. Folio. ff.[i] Title-page, ff.[i] advertisement, ff.[i] prospectus, pp.viiintroduction, pp.[i] blank, 60 double-page copperplate engraved maps withoriginal colour. Half Russia (a little worn) decorated in gilt and blind, repaired by W.Gaiger. Spine faded. Three maps with minor repaired tears. The first and only edition of Pinkerton's large atlas has maps delicately engraved by Samuel Neele with consummate care and attention to detail. These large-scale and finely engraved maps include pairs of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, and the Northern and Southern Polar projections. Also included are very detailed maps of topical areas of Europe, individual maps of Arabia, China, India, Japan and Australasia. There are also fourteen maps relating to the New World including very detailed coverage of North America's Spanish South-West, centred on the developing Texas region, and on the South-East States. John Pinkerton, best known for just this publication, drew on the up-to-date and very accurate maps of the Arrowsmiths, Rennell, and others to produce these maps. The unusually large size of the maps allows for considerable information, where known, to be shown. The atlas provides an excellent summary of the world's geography at the start of the nineteenth century presented in maps with attractive, fresh and bright wash colour.
