A magnificent plan-perspective of the Escorial Palace, home to the Spanish Royal Family in Madrid (although the palace was situated well outside the city when this view was created). This scarce plate was published in the sixth and last volume of Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg's monumental work, "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", and bears a poem dedicated to Philip II of Spain. This example, in fine original colour, has French text on the reverse.
