Fifty five superb maps from Blaeu's great "Atlas Maior" representing the first atlas of Scotland and Ireland. Folio. Tp, pp.[viii], pp.1-232, pp.1-82, pp.[i] 54 double-page and one single-page copperplate engr maps. Generally good condition. Contemporary vellum binding, gilt panelled, a little stained and repaired in places, housed in a modern red buckram slip-case. Joan Blaeu's atlas of the counties of Scotland and Ireland, published as Volume V, is one of the finest designed and engraved of the 12 volumes that eventually comprised the "Atlas Maior", arguably, the finest atlas publication of any period. The maps of Scotland were derived mainly from the surveys of Minister Timothy Pont and those of Ireland from John Speed's atlas. All are decorated with elegant cartouches and typography with fine strong contemporary colour. As often, because the paper used for this volume was not such fine quality as some Blaeu publications, there is some browning, affecting text leaves in the main. The decorative title-page includes gold leaf detailing. This is the only Spanish text edition of this volume in which sheets of Spanish text were laid over already printed leaves, making pages in this atlas feel doubly thick. A very acceptable example of an important and beautifully produced atlas from a great period in cartographic history.
