Mappa V - Provinciae Maragnonii Societatis Jesu
|
A fascinating manuscript map of the Amazon and its many tributaries drawn by an elegant hand, in sepia ink, by or for a Jesuit missionary. The map extends from the Atlantic Ocean inland as far as Javari. Apart from the physical features of the river system, the map also names towns, cities, the seminaries, colleges and various Christian missionaries - each indicated by a symbol then explained in the key at lower right. The map includes several instances of the Christogram IHS emphasising the origins and purpose of this document. The title cartouche is placed centrally, decorated with an attractive sequence of shells, and the date is given in roman numerals while the mileage scale is given in Spanish miles in the lower left corner. The verso bears a contemporary inscription 'Mappa presens ex Maragnon submissa fuit a R.P.Anselmo Echart..nuper missin nunc Vinchi Jesu Ch in Lusitania. R.P. Georgic Eckart...Patruo Suo No 159'. Father Anselm Eckart was a Jesuit missionary who came to the Amazon region in 1753 and worked at the Abacaxis mission on the River Madeira and then the Trocano Mission, before returning to Portugal and then travelling further in Europe. On thin paper with one or two areas of weakness at old folds, otherwise in good condition.
