Carte Des Variations De La Boussole
|
An attractive and large-scale chart of the whole world indicating ocean currents, magnetic variations and prevailing wind directions. The world is shown on Mercator's projection with only coastal detail named - the focus being on the thematic information. A large title cartouche with a decorative foliate surround occupies the Asian landmass and also includes an image of the globe surmounted with French fleur-de-lys - Bourbon intentions throughout the wider world are thus made clear (despite recent losses during the French/Indian War). A passage of text in the lower left corner acts as an explanatory accompaniment to the many features of the map including the marked magnetic variations. Jacques Nicolas Bellin was the most prominent French map/chartmaker of the period and responsible for much of the output from the Depot de La Marine - the French hydrographic department.
