Canada Orientale Nell'America Settentrionale ...
|
An attractive example of this scarce and very decorative map of the mouth of the St.Lawrence with Newfoundland at its centre. A large title cartouche at top right is decorated with two large fish gargoyles, representing the region's staple industry at this time. Coronelli has, as often, derived his detail for this map from the Parisian Nolin, whose map was published ten years earlier. Coronelli (1650-1718) is widely recognised as one of Italy's most famous and greatest cartographers. A Franciscan monk, and later head of the Order, he had a prolific output of globes and produced at least 500 maps. His earliest work was a pair of globes for Louis XIV, each with a diameter of fifteen feet, which were painted rather than printed. In 1688, he published a series of printed globes, remarkable for their size and high standard of engraving. He also published the "Atlante Veneto" (1691-1696), which was intended as a continuation of the Blaeu "Atlas Maior", and the "Isolario". This map is engraved in his characteristic fine, bold style, and uses the latest geographical information available.
