Plan De La Ville Et Port De St.Petersbourg
|
Bellin's attractive map of St Petersburg was published in "Le Petit Atlas Maritime" and shows the city in considerable detail along with the surrounding waterway. The title cartouche and mileage scale are elegantly depicted in the upper right corner. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and prolific French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century and was in the service of the French Hydrographical Office. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King. This map of St Petersburg is typical of his clear style.
