Occidentalior Tractus Indiarum Orientalium
|
A good example in attractive, strong full colour of a later issue of Frederic De Wit's chart. The chart extends along the East African coast from the Cape northwards to include all Arabia, the Gulf and the western part of the Indian Ocean as far as India and the Maldives. De Wit's "Atlas Maritimus" enjoyed popular acclaim, being a finely produced synopsis of current hydrographic knowledge, presented on well engraved general charts covering the whole world. De Wit's charts maintained the artistic elements of "the Golden Age of Cartography" in the face of the more utilitarian, albeit more up-to-date, charts of the Van Keulen family and others. This fine chart has an imposing titlepiece with figures, animals and so on sited on the African mainland.
