A New & Most Accurate Map Of The Roads Of England And Wales ...
|
This road map of England and Wales was engraved for "The Modern Universal British Traveller", which was published by J.Cooke in 1779. According to its title, the work comprised a "... new, complete, and accurate tour through England, Wales, Scotland, and the neighbouring islands. Comprising all that is worthy of observation in Great Britain. And containing a full, ample, and circumstantial account of every thing remarkable in the several cities, boroughs, market towns, villages, hamlets, &c. throughout the kingdom ... being the result of an actual and late general survey of the whole kingdom. And including various maps, corrected from the latest observations, a collection of landscapes views, &c. that make an admirable group of elegant copper-plate prints". This map of England and Wales is unsigned, but is similar in style to works by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin. The map includes the distance by milestones between towns and also the distances from London. The title cartouche at upper left includes a mileage stone and a rider on horseback, along with a description of how distances are measured. With slight evidence of old folds and one or two expert repairs to areas of weakness along these folds, nevertheless a good depiction of the road system in the latter part of the eighteenth century.
