A second dramatic, albeit imaginary and stylised, view of an English town from 'The Nuremberg Chronicle'. This English town view has a
similar Spanish town view to the verso. 'The Nuremberg Chronicle was an encyclopaedic history and description of the ancient and biblical world. The 'Chronicle' was allied with woodcuts of major European cities, and is now regarded as one of the great early printed books - being the largest and most lavishly illustrated pre-1500. The book appeared in just two editions and both date from 1493; the first edition had Latin text and the second, as here, had German text. The first edition formed the first representation of an English city in print. The block is set in a page of German text (our measurements are for the view only and not the page of text).
