The Antiquary William Stukeley's map of England and Wales clearly delineates the Roman road network and attributes Roman names to the towns, cities and rivers. The Roman mileage scale is given in the upper left corner and the Latin title cartouche appears at upper right. The map was published in the "Itinerantium Curiosum", an account of his journeys in historical Britain, and although the map is dated 1723, the book was not actually published until 1724. The map was also used by Moll in "A New Description Of England And Wales" and Shirley suggests, on stylistic grounds, that Moll may well have been the engraver for this map. A history within a history.
