Nova Totius Angliae, Scotiae Et Hiberniae Tabula ...

A very rare and important separately issued wall map of the British Isles published by Justus Danckerts printed on four sheets joined. Very few examples of this map are known - Shirley, writing in 1988, identified just two examples - we are aware of just five others, including this. The map is elegantly engraved with a decorative title cartouche in the upper right corner in which cherubs support the title banner whilst mermen surround the Royal Arms (in Stuart form corresponding to the reign of James II) depicted below. The privilege, "Cum Privil: Ordin: Hollandiae Et West-Frisiae", implies a publication date of c.1685 shortly after the privilege had been granted to the Danckerts family. A mileage scale in the lower left corner and numerous sailing ships (many with canons blazing) add to the decorative elements of this map. Original outline colour delineates each of the counties and a number of county towns or important cities have been underlined in red (perhaps latterly). The Danckerts family were active mapmaker/publishers through several generations, from the 1620's for a hundred years. Although a handful of wall maps are recorded by the family, most of their output was of atlas maps. However, of the wall maps, little is recorded of this particular map of the British Isles, obviously intended to fill a gap in the market where there was no other comparable map for the islands. This fine example, with minor paper defects expertly repaired, demonstrates the elegance and clarity of Dutch engraving at its finest on one of the period's very few large scale depictions of the British Isles.
