John Cary (1755-1835) was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher, working between 1787 and 1834 in London. Cary's publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps, of which this is a fine example. The full title reads "A New Map Of Part Of The United States Of North America, Containing Those Of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland And Virginia. From The Latest Authorities". The map was published in Cary's "New Universal Atlas" from 1808 - this later example is updated with more detail and bears the date 1825. The map includes considerable detail of state and territory boundaries, extensive nomenclature, the depiction of major overland routes and additional textual annotations. A most informative and attractive item.
