Cyprus Insula
|
With attractive original outline colour this is an uncommon re-issue by Covens and Mortier of Jansson's Cyprus plate that was first published, nearly seventy years earlier in 1637, during the "Golden Age of Dutch Cartography". This re-issue includes some re-engraving as well as the imprint of publishers Jean Covens and Corneille Mortier. This republication testifies to the popularity of many seventeenth century maps and reflects the fact that little cartographic progress was made to improve the internal detail of the island. By comparison new hydrographic information was becoming available allowing coastlines and coastal detail to be updated in hydrographic publications of this period. This example also retains the attractive title cartouche showing Aphrodite in her chariot being towed by swans.
