A fascinating large-scale map of London designed to illustrate the extent of the Fire and identifying the major buildings affected. Published in 1723 and dedicated to the Society of Antiquaries, this is George Vertue's re-engraving of Hollar's very rare etching of 1667. Hollar's map referred to John Leake's map as its source but apparently no example of this original six-sheet map by Leake has been found. Vertue's map, here on two sheets joined, is a derivative of the Hollar map at the very large scale of 34 1/2 inches to one statute mile. The map extends from Fetter Lane to Tower Dock, and from Moorgate to the banks of the Thames. Vertue also added information such as the width of streets, and his map has the added attraction of inset, vignette views; old buildings near the Temple Gate, Baynard's Castle, the old south view of St Paul's, the west view of St Paul's, Cheapside, the south front of the Guildhall, the Royal Exchange and finally an inset plan of London and Westminster. An interesting and uncommon map.
