America Pars Sexta Sive Historiae Ab Hieronymo Benzono
|
Quarto. pp.1-107 including engraved title-page with one map of the Americas and one town plan of Cusco, Engraved Tp, pp.[i], ff.1-28 (blank versos) each with an engraved plate illustration. Vellum spine and modern paste-boards with new endpapers. An attractive example of part six of Theodore de Bry's "Grand Voyages" in Latin forming the third volume of Girolamo Benzoni's voyages in the New World between 1541 and 1556. The volume includes the important map of the New World summarising the best knowledge of the time, mainly derived from Petrus Plancius' world map of the same year. It shows North America and South America with a rather bulbous Brazil, and the Great Southern Continent extending across the South Pacific from the Straits of Magellan to New Guinea. Virginia and the South-East are shown relatively correctly after White and Le Moyne, whereas the coastlines above await improvement. This elegant, engraved map is of particular note for the inclusion of full-length portraits of Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan and Francisco Pizarro standing tall and proud in each corner of the map, and each gesturing to the tools of their trade including maps and compasses. Further decorative features include ships and a fierce looking whale, while Theodore De Bry's name appears beneath the hemisphere. The text with some 28 engraved illustrations recounts the adventures of Pizarro with Atabaliba in Peru, amongst others. Some minor expert restoration to paper defects, nevertheless, a lovely example of an important publication.
