Vollstandiger Hand-Atlas Der Neueren Erdbescriebung-& Supplement
|
A scarce and detailed atlas of maps of Europe and newly delineated parts of the world in the mid-nineteenth century. Oblong Folio. Tp, Contents, ff.[i] Half-Title, with 80 lithograph map sheets with original outline colour. Supplement:Tp, 32 lithograph map sheets with original outline colour. Both volumes half-calf with marbled paper boards and endpapers. Red morocco labels to front covers with gold embossed title. Published in sections, this atlas with its second volume, the scarce 'Supplement', includes a number of interesting and important maps of newly mapped regions. The atlas provides good geographical coverage of the world, and particularly Europe. The supplement includes thematic maps of religious distribution and new detail of emerging areas such as Oregon and New South Wales. Texas is also depicted separately and had been an independent republic from 1836-1845. The maps are carefully delineated, detailed and functional, yet remain attractive in appearance. Carl von Flemming (1806-1878) was the founder of the Carl Flemming publishing house. He was succeeded by his sons Carl Martin and Georg until the firm was sold in 1888 and finally closed in 1932. As well as this Sohr Hand-Atlas, the firm published other works in both Berlin and Glogau. This atlas represents a nice example of work from the Flemming publishing house.
