John Speed's great atlas - the 'Prospect ...' and the 'Theatre ...' containing his renowned world and county maps. Folio. ff.[i] portrait, Tp "A Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World ...", pp.1-44 with 21 copperplate engraved maps (numbered text to verso), Tp "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine", pp.[i] British Empire, pp.[i] achievements of King James, pp.[ii] dedication to King James, pp.[iii] to the reader, pp.[i] blank, pp.[iii] to Mr Speed, pp.[i] blank, pp.[ii] contents, pp.5-8 with Invasions map, pp.1-146 with 68 copperplate engraved maps (numbered text to verso), pp.[x] index. Printed by John Legatt for William Humble. Full C18th calf with panelled spine, joints split. Maps in generally good condition - one or two trimmed a little close. Paper weakness and a small hole in the text on King James' dedication page - a publisher's defect. John Speed's maps of the British counties and of the world's countries are probably the best known to anyone who appreciates, or has the slightest knowledge, of antique maps of any period. His atlas of British maps was the first to be published of the counties of all England, Wales and Ireland with a general map of Scotland. The atlas of world maps was the first such to be produced and published by an Englishman. Each includes maps which are renowned for their detail, decorative content and innovation in the presentation of information and, allied to the descriptive text usually found on the maps' verso, each map is a fascinating historical document.
