Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique Ou Description Generale Du Globe

A magnificent, double-hemisphere map of the world showing California as an island and with an intricate and complicated publication history. Jaillot's map includes partial outlines of Australia and New Zealand, as well as an indication of the great "Terre Australe et Inconnue" in the Antarctic. In addition, the western hemisphere shows a "Terre De Iesso" that nearly meets with the Californian west coast. Decoration is relatively minimal with just the cusp between the hemispheres supporting cherubs riding fish and with mermen flanking the dedication to Le Dauphin. The imprint reads, "A Paris joignat les grads Augustins, aux 2 Globes", with the date 1691. This map was engraved for publication in Alexis Hubert Jaillot's "Atlas Nouveau" and is the fourth world plate (the first having appeared in 1674) used in the atlas, here in its first state showing the date 1691. It is possible that this example was also published by Pierre Mortier and Marc Huguetan in Amsterdam (even with Jaillot's Parisian address showing). Attractive and bold original colour adds to the decorative appearance of this fine world map from a series accepted as one of the finest ever produced. Minor restoration to lower centrefold and a little light offsetting of strong colouring.
