Untitled [Plate A3 - Knightsbridge]
|
Showing Brompton Row, Knightsbridge and a good portion of Hyde Park, this isa most interesting sheet from Horwood's map of London. Horwood's map isdescribed by Howgego as, "The Largest And Most Important Map Of London FromThe Eighteenth Century." The survey took no less than nine years tocomplete with every house shown (with its number, if it had one) along withalleyways, courts and even vacant plots. Among the subscribers were thedirectors of the Phoenix Assurance Office to whose trustees and directorsHorwood dedicated the map. At no less than 26 inches to the mile it wouldhave repaid the insurers' investment, affording detailed knowledge ofLondon's potential fire risks. Slight evidence of old folds, otherwise ingood, clean condition.
