Accuratissima Angliae Scotiae Et Hibernia ...
|
A detailed and consummately engraved map of the British Isles. A striking title cartouche is surmounted by portraits of William and Mary suggesting a publication date close to their accession to the throne in 1689. Their portraits are surrounded by instruments of war whilst beneath the title, Neptune sits with the initials W and M seeming to spring from his crown. In the opposing corner allegories of each of the four continents support a globe bathed in light and surrounded by the Garter. The surrounding seas are filled with ships, adding further to the sea imagery of the map. Protective margins added and expert restoration to centrefold, nevertheless a very acceptable example of this rare, historically significant, and elegantly designed map.
