A New Map Of North Wales Divided Into Its Six Counties Or Shires

A New Map Of North Wales Divided Into Its Six Counties Or Shires

A magnificent and infrequently seen map of North Wales comprising the counties of Anglesey, Merionethshire, Caernarvon, Denbigh, Flint and Montgomeryshire. The map combines a wealth of information with decorative detail; the market towns and days are given in a clear list, distances measured from London are shown, turnpike and mail coach roads are depicted, as are the bye roads, navigable canals and even the Roman stations and lines of communications are depicted. In the lower left corner a large and detailed vignette shows Snowdon rising above the clouds with figures and local fauna in the foreground. A text description beneath the title conveys further information about the area depicted. William Darton published the "Complete Atlas Of The Counties Of England" in 1822 containing maps by Thomas Dix, who had died before the atlas was completed. Many of the maps show earlier printed dates, as here where the date in the lower margin is given as 1820. A wonderful nineteenth-century publication combining fastidious attention to survey detail and wonderful decoration.
