Les Isles Britanniques ...
|
A large and impressive map of the British Isles with an inset plan of the Orkneys, Faeroes and Shetlands at upper right. A title in ornate surround appears in the Atlantic, while a further title (also in French) is given across the top of the map. The imprint reads, "A Paris joignat les grands Augustins, aux 2 Globes", with the date 1692. This map was engraved for publication in Alexis Hubert Jaillot's "Atlas Nouveau" and was re-published by Mortier in Amsterdam. Shirley tells us "the plate history of Jaillot's maps is complex" in "Printed Maps Of The British Isles", and from the information given this would appear to be the second state (dated 1692 and with lines of latitude and longitude) of the second plate. Nevertheless, an interesting item in any edition! The history of seventeenth-century European cartography is generally dominated by the Dutch map and atlas publishers whose work is collectively termed as being from "The Golden Age of Cartography", due to the quality of its presentation. However, much of the cartography was dependent on the work of French mapmakers, particularly the influential Nicolas Sanson, whose mid-century publications formed the basis for subsequent publishers. Sanson's work lacked the artistic and decorative elements typifying Dutch output until Alexis Hubert Jaillot's input.
