An early and pictorial representation of Brazil oriented with north to the right of the page. This graphic woodblock map, cut by the great Venetian cartographer Giacomo Gastaldi, appeared in Giovanni Baptista Ramusio's "Raccolta Di Navigationi Et Viaggi" - a collection of travel narratives. Tooley's "Dictionary Of Mapmakers" tells us that Ramusio was Secretary to the Council of Ten in Venice, as well as being a historian and geographer, and also tutored Gastaldi's son in cosmography. His map of Brazil is filled with scenes of life in full flow; hunting, building, eating, drinking and relaxing. Geographical detail is comprised of the river names and little else, such are the pictorial scenes. Around the coast sailing ships and sea creatures populate the busy waters. Page numbers 427 and 428 appear above the map (the verso is blank) indicating this map is from either the 1556 edition or the 1565 edition, cut from a new woodblock after the first was destroyed by fire. A little expert centrefold restoration, otherwise in good condition.
