A good example of one of the most attractive maps of the island of Ceylon, shown with north to the right, in full original colour. Matthias Seutter was one of a handful of German mapmaker/publishers active at this time and competing with Dutch and French dominance of the European map trade. Their
work is typified by a strongly engraved style with elaborate cartouches, in this case decorated with European and Ceylonese figures, swags of fruit and trinkets, and, as here, distinctive full wash colour on land areas.
