Septentrionalium Terrarum Descriptio

Septentrionalium Terrarum Descriptio

Mercator's magnificent map of the northern polar hempisphere. The large central hemisphere is contained within a decorative border which includes inset maps of the (mythical) island of Frisland, Shetland and the Faeroe Isles. With partial coastlines depicted for Nova Zembla and other arctic islands this is a map of conjecture and speculation. The North Pole is shown to be an island traversable by sea - the Straights of Anian lead to a north-west passage and extend all around the Pole. With French text to the verso and the page numbers 73-76, this example is identified as being from a 1628 edition of Mercator's atlas. In generally good condition with a little expert resoration to the centrefold and one or two marginal nicks expertly restored.
