Veue Et Perspective Du Chateau Et Jardin De Versailles ...
|
A magnificent, Dutch-published view of Versailles as seen from the Place
d'Armes. The foreground displays a wonderful tableau of palace life and
its pageantry with troops and crowds active. Beyond the palace the formal gardens are also visible. Louis XIV had expanded the palace at Versailles during the latter years of the seventeenth century and it would have been a much-discussed topic at the time of publication. This engraving would have conveyed the grandeur and sheer-size of Versailles, one of the world's largest palaces, to the wider world - specifically Amsterdam and West Frisia in the case of Valk's publication. A little lower centrefold restoration and one tear extending from the lower edge just into the printed area expertly repaired.
