Orbis Typus Universalis Justa Hydrographorum Traditionem ...

An important map from Laurent Fries' editions of Ptolemy's "Geographia" -
a modern world map of his own 'design' and not a reduction of a map by
Martin Waldseemuller. The title banner includes the initials LF, a very
visual reminder of Fries' claim of authorship. The map includes some of
the geographical misconceptions of the day, showing England and Scotland as separate islands as Waldseemuller did, but Fries also includes a rather misshapen Asia in which there appear to be two Indian peninsula. South America is shown along with the islands of Spagnol and Isabella. With the title "Tabula Orbis Cum Descriptione Ventorum" appearing above the map and banner title, this example can be identified as having been published in a 1541 (Vienne) edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia". Minor centrefold restoration as one might expect. A good opportunity to acquire one of the earliest, obtainable printed maps of the "modern world".
