Originally published in the Parliamentary Reports for 1799, printed by Hansard & Sons, this detailed plan shows the proposed London Docks at Wapping by Daniel Alexander as part of the improvements to the Port of London. The area coloured pink shows the exact site to be affected by the docks. The London Docks were constructed as one of several sets of docks in the historic Port of London. They were constructed in Wapping between 1799 and 1815, and so work was underway when this 1803 edition of the plans was published. Traditionally ships had docked at wharves on the River Thames, but greater capacity was needed by the end of the eighteenth century. Until St Katharine's Docks were built two decades later, the London Docks were the closest to the City). Marginal nicks and tears repaired, otherwise in good condition.
