"The National Atlas Of Historical, Commercial, And Political Geography, Constructed From The Most Recent And Authentic Sources, By Alexander Keith Johnston, F.R.G.S., Honorary Member Of The Geographical Society, Berlin, And Geographer At Edinburgh In Ordinary To Her Majesty. With A Copious Index Carefully Compiled From The Maps". With the imprint of Cowan & Co at 17 Princes Street on the title-page and that of T.Constable on the dedication page. Three quarter calf with embossed gilt title, panelled spine with further gilt detail, attractive marbled endpapers. Both COPAC and Sotheby's Wardington Library Catalogue suggest that the "National Atlas" was first published with 46 maps in 1843 and was the genesis of his later "Physical Atlas". The publication of the "National Atlas" marked the emergence of Edinburgh as a primary centre of map production. However, it is the five-sheet section on physical, or thematic, geography from the "National Atlas" that is often credited as being of particular note. Four of these maps are by Heinrich Berghaus and the other by Gustav Kombst. The inclusion of these physical maps was a direct result of Johnston's visit to Europe in 1842, where he met Berghaus and was introduced to his large "Physikalischer Atlas" which had appeared some five years earlier. As this example of the "National Atlas" lacks the five physical maps, it may predate the inclusion of the Physical maps, thus rather unusual. Folio. Tp with blank verso, pp.[iv] dedication and contents, pp.11 index, 41 double-page steel plate engraved maps with original outline colour.
