A fine map of Afghanistan on two sheets (forming the western and eastern halves) - each sheet is dissected into 16 pieces and laid on linen. Marbled endpapers each have a manuscript label with the map's title. The map was published under the direction of Colonel H.R.Thuillier, Surveyor-General of India, in 1889 and has been augmented by the addition of railways as in March 1892. A list of some of the authorities and sources consulted in the production of the map is given at lower right. At a scale of one inch to 24 miles the map is immensely detailed with forts, passes, subterranean canals, shrines, streams and ruins (amongst other things) being depicted in addition to the physical details. At the time of printing the map was priced at three rupees uncoloured, and three rupees eight annas coloured. The map was produced by means of photozincography - this photographic production of a printing plate was first employed by the Ordnance Survey in the 1860s to make reproductions of their maps. Photozincography or heliozincography are characteristic of the use of photography in map production in the late nineteenth century. A wonderfully detailed map of a strategically important area. COPAC lists examples of the map held at the British Library, the National Library of Scotland and the University of London.
