A dramatic view of the Castel Novo on the Golfo Di Cataro (the Gulf of Kotor on the Dalmatian coast) - a stronghold of the Venetian Republic from the end of the seventeenth century, when the Venetians had wrested overall control of the bay from the Turks. The whole area became part of the Venetian Republic, with the name of Albania Veneta. This attractive copperplate view shows the castle rising from the cliffs and in the foreground there is evidence of a recent sea battle. The domed building inside the walls is surmounted by a crescent moon. The plate was first published in Mortier's "Nouveau Theatre De Toute L'Italie" issued in 1704/05 and then re-issued by R.Chr.Alberts in 1724/25. Mortier's Italian atlas was a re-issue in four volumes of Blaeu's town-books of Italy along with many new maps that he had designed himself, this being one such example.
