A fine impression of a scarce world map based on Mercator's of 1569. Cartographically the detail is somewhat out-dated with the retention of the bulge in the South American west coast and a number of mythical North Atlantic islands. Within the area of Australia there is a note referring to Marco Polo's reports. It is also interesting to note that while most other mapmakers of the period included illustrations and vignettes of animals, sea monsters, and native life, Quad has chosen to decorate his map with a well engraved oval-framed portrait of Jesus Christ in the blank areas of northwest America - emphasising the evangelical zeal of many early explorers seeking to find an Earthly Paradise in the New World.
