An unusual and scarce record of the South Pole, being the lower of a pair of circular plates, or 'calottes', designed to be applied to the top and bottom of a globe whose other surfaces would be covered with segmented gores. Not surprisingly, no topographical detail appears as none was known in such southerly latitudes at this time, but the finely engraved script describes the earth's climatic zones, while a large vignette with figures, animals and merchandise, including a large globe, surrounds a panel of text describing Magellan's circumnavigation. Vincenzo Coronelli was the finest European globemaker of the period and this sheet is a fascinating example of his skill.
