An important Dutch derivative of John Smith's landmark map of the newly founded English colony of Virginia, based on state one of that map. It was through Hondius' finely engraved version that Smith's cartography was disseminated throughout Europe, first by Hondius himself, and then after his untimely death, by the appearance of this plate (with a re-engraved signature) in the many editions of the Blaeu atlases from 1630. A particularly fresh and attractive example of this famous map.
