The titlepage to Volume IV of Moses Pitt's "English Atlas" that is devoted to "The Description Of The Seventeen Provinces Of The Low-Countries, or Netherlands". Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre illustrates the page and the text is printed in both red and black. This example is accompanied by the following dedication page to the Duke of York. Pitt had intended a multi-volume atlas in the tradition of earlier Dutch atlases. He began using and updating existing copperplates in the possession of the Dutch publishing firm of Johannes Jansson van Waesberge, son-in-law, heir and
successor to Jan Jansson. However, when Pitt's atlas was first published in Oxford in 1680 it was incomplete with only four volumes of maps and a fifth of text actually having been produced. Pitt suffered a sentence in the debtor's prison as a result of his attempted publication. This page is in good, clean condition.
