An attractively engraved planisphere showing the signs of the zodiac around a planetary diagram and detailed text annotations. Cherubs, mythological figures and portraits of Tycho Brahe and Riccioli decorate the plate. Johann Gabriel Doppelmaier [or Doppermayr] (1677-1750) was an astronomer and cartographer of Nuremberg. His "Atlas Coelestis", published
by Homann in 1742, was one of the major celestial atlases of the eighteenth century. Only one edition of the atlas was made, but some maps had been previously published by Homann, either bound into atlases or issued as separate sheets.
