Cont vellum, new ties, c/p title, 65 maps, 10 c/p portraits tipped in. An apparently unique composite collection of 65, of 67, maps by John Speed formally issued with text as "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine", with the addition of 10 selected contemporary portraits of important national figures, under the title "History Of Great Britaine ...". Speed's famous atlas of county maps of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland had first been published in 1612 as a complement to his popular "History Of Great Britaine ..." and comprised 67 maps printed from copperplates engraved, mainly, by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam between the years 1607 and 1611. Early editions of the atlas appeared in 1612, 1614, 1616 (with Latin text), 1623 and 1627, during which time the plates were altered by the addition of detail and the effects of wear and tear. The publisher's imprint details were altered in 1627. This volume comprises 65 maps, lacking the general map of the British Isles and that of Lancashire. The map plates present are numbered, in a contemporary hand 2-40 and 42-67, however, there is no evidence of the missing maps actually having been removed. (Added portraits include those of Queen Elizabeth I, James I, Sir Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, Sir Francis Drake and Sir Thomas Cavendish.)
